FEAST 6 : DAY OF ATONEMENT

Y O M   K I P P U R

The Day
Of
Atonement

Also known as:

n      Face to Face
n      The Day (or the Great Day)
n      The Fast (Acts 27:9)
n      The Great Shofar (Shofar HaGadol)
n      Neilah (the closing of the gates)

Passover speaks of PERSONAL REDEMPTION
n      Each individual “household” shall sacrifice a lamb and mark their doorways
n      This personal redemption is epitomized in the redemptive acts of YESHUA the MESSIAH.

Whereas Yom Kippur speaks to the Redemption of the Nation of Israel.
n      A sacrifice for the Nation
n      A time for Israel to deal with their transgressions against the LORD.

I S R A E L

From Genesis 32 : 28

n      #3478 Yisra’el
n      GOD prevails or “he who contends with GOD”
n      #8280  sa’ra
n      to have power, to contend
n      #410    el
n      god, god-like, mighty

The History of Israel is one that has contended with their GOD, and as one in which GOD has certainly prevailed amidst adversity!

The “First” Yom Kippur

Exodus 32 : 30-34

30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people: 'Ye have sinned a great sin; and now I will go up unto the LORD, perhaps I shall make atonement [3722]for your sin.'

n      3722   {kafar} to cover – as to cover over with pitch [Noah’s ark]    GEN 6:14
n      The idea is that you are covered until payment can actually be made.

31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said: 'Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them a god of gold.

q     This is referring to the golden bull-calf episode of Exodus 32 : 1
q     See scriptural insert below
q     They attempted to create their own mediator of righteousness through an idol of GOLD
q     GOLD symbolizes righteousness or divinity

[[[Exodus 32:1
1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him: 'Up, make us a god who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.'

n      The problem stemmed from the “peoples” desire for an intercessor/mediator
n      How quickly we can turn astray if we do not keep our focus on HIM.]]]

…now back to the “first” Yom Kippur – Moses is speaking with the LORD

[32 ]Yet now, if Thou wilt bear up their sin; and if not, please blot me out of Thy book which Thou hast written.'

[33] And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Whosoever hath sinned against ME, him will I blot out of My book.

[34] And now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee; behold, My Messenger shall go before thee; nevertheless in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.‘

  • That is true on YOM KIPPUR and when YESHUA “visited” them

Exodus 34 : 29-30, 10-28

q     The Tablets are Replaced
n      two sets of tablets
n      two comings of YESHUA

q     Just as many Jews “missed” the MESSIAH the FIRST time he came, so they will come to accept HIM upon HIS SECOND COMING ! ! !

The Covenant “Renewed”

Ø      The Day of Atonement was a GRACIOUS day
Ø      New beginning for the people of Israel.

Ø      Points to GOD’s ultimate plan for:
Ø      the complete removal of sin
Ø      the creation of a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness reigns & dwells.

Let’s now look to the book of Leviticus where the LORD institutes its observance . . .

Leviticus 16 : 2 - 15

and the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the
Holy Place
inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.

n      Only ONCE a year was the HIGH PRIEST allowed into the Holy of Holies.
n      Only on YOM KIPPUR
The Tabernacle

The Ark of the Covenant

[3] But in this way Aaron shall come into the
Holy Place
: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

n      Interesting that Aaron has to offer a “bull” for HIMSELF and HIS Family
n      Perhaps A “reminder” for his offense with the golden calf [young bullock]
n      The Ram – the mercy shown with the “Binding of Isaac”

[4 ] He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on.

n      The royal priesthood garments are not worn, ONLY the white linen undergarments

[5 ] And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

[6] “Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house.

THE TWO GOATS

[9]Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the LORD at the entrance of the tent of meeting [mo`ed].
[8] And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for Azazel.

And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD and use it as a sin offering,
[10] but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the LORD to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness as the scapegoat.

n      5799   Azazel            entire removal
FROM
n      5795               Az       meaning “goat”
n      235                 Azal    to go away

n      It is interesting to note that Azazel was seen as a type of satan (Ha satan) in the intertestamental Book of Enoch (8:1).

The sins of the people and thus the punishment of the people were laid upon azazel the scapegoat.

He would bear the sins of the people and the punishment of the people would be upon him.

Azazel being sent into the wilderness is understood to be a picture of satan (Ha satan) being cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20).

The Seven Festivals of the Messiah

[11] “Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself.
[12] And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil
n      The HIGH Priest enters the Holy of Holies AFTER a Sin offering is made for himself
[13] and put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die.

Take Note:
n      The LORD speaks from above the mercy seat
n      Genesis 25:22
n      The LORD appears in the cloud over the mercy seat
n      Leviticus 16:2
n      Exodus 30: 34-38 – Matthew 26: 6-13
n      Depicting the Burial Spices/ anointing oil of YESHUA – that’s the aroma going up to the FATHER ALONG with the Prayers of the Priest

Now contrast that with what is going on in Heaven in …

Revelation 8 : 3-4

[3]And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne,
[4 ] and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before GOD from the hand of the angel.

. . . Back to Leviticus 16 : 14 -15

[14 ] And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

n      The High Priest is now sprinkling blood in HIS white, linen robs.
n      Seven symbolizes completeness

[15 ] “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat.

n      3727   kapporeth
n      place of atonement; propitiatory [appease/reconcile]
ROOT

n      3722   kafar
n      to cover [which we translate atonement]

V I S U A L I Z E
What’s
Going On

n      Visualize the symbolism of mercy covering the Torah and the commandments [The Ark of the Covenant]

n      Again picture what the white linen garments must look like NOW – splattered with the blood of the sin offering

n      On Yom Kippur – everyone covers themselves in WHITE garments

Now let’s look at JESUS our HIGH PRIEST from

Revelation 19 : 13 -14

[13] HE is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of GOD.
[14 ] And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following HIM on white horses.

Leviticus 16 : 20 – 22

. . . back to the two goats

[20] “And when he has made an end of atoning for the
Holy Place
and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat.

[21] And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness.

Revelation 20 : 1

[1] Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain.

n      Unnamed man and an unnamed Angel

[22] The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.

n      The scapegoat was brought out into the wilderness, but NOT killed.  They started “killing” the scapegoat much later during Temple times, because the scapegoat would sometimes return.

Remember
n      Only blood can make atonement

Leviticus 17:11

[11]For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

A statute forever…

Leviticus 16 : 29

[29] “And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict /humble yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you.

This Appointed Time or FEAST is specifically aimed at the NATION of ISRAEL.

It is a time for them to be reconciled to their GOD through their Messiah, JESUS.

Let’s look at what Paul says about the Jews…

Romans 11 : 25, 30, 31

[25] Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

[30] For just as you were at one time disobedient to GOD but now have received mercy because of their disobedience,

[31] so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy.

  • It was for our benefit that they did not collectively as a Nation recognize JESUS as Messiah.
  • W O W ! ! !
2 Corinthians 3:13-16

[13] not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.

[14] But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through CHRIST is it taken away.

[15] Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts.

[16] But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.

  • During this time of YOM KIPPUR may We as followers of YESHUA pray for the peace, protection and salvation of ISRAEL.

Want to see something C O O L . . . ?

The High Priest would Cast Lots to see which goat would perform which duty.

They put a black and a white stone in a bag and drew the stones.

n      The Lot of the LORD should fall in the right hand
n      The Lot of the Azazel should fall in the left hand
n      If this happens then they believed all would go well with them for that year.

Now  W A T C H  this . . .

~ The Talmud and Josephus
[a first century Jewish Historian]
relate 4 particularly ominous events that took place the 40 years between MESSIAH’s crucifixion and the Temple’s destruction in
70 A.D. ~

FIRST

n      The Lot for the LORD’s goat would come up in the left hand

n      During the 200 years prior to 30 CE, the High Priest chose a black stone as often as he chose a white one.
n      However, in the 40 years prior to the destruction of the Temple, a black stone, the lot for Azazel, was chosen every time!

SECONDLY

The Scarlet thread stopped turning white

n      In order to tell the two goats apart, they would tie a crimson ribbon on the Azazel/scapegoat.
n      They would also put a crimson ribbon on the Temple doors
n      During Messiah’s  time, the crimson ribbon would turn WHITE
Isaiah 1:18
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

THIRDLY

n      The Westernmost light on the Temple Menorah wouldn’t stay lit

n      The Westernmost Light was considered to be the position of the LORD’s "light" / Spirit.  It's the central position on the diagram above.

FINALLY

n      The Temple doors would open by themselves [these are HUGE doors that required multiple priests to open].
n      As a result, Yohanan ben Zakkai declared Temple would be destroyed.
n      He quoted from
Zechariah 11:1
Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy  cedars.

             Don't we WORSHIP an AMAZING GOD ! ! !

~ Love Much.  Forgive Often.  Seek Earnestly ~
