The Promise of a NEW COVENANT

Jeremiah 31 - 34

[31] “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
[32] not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD.
[33] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my Torah within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Ø      Where did the House of Judah go?

Salvation will be available to BOTH houses.
Israel represents the CHURCH and also speaks of the UNITY of  the house of Judah and Israel.
This is NOT to say that the Church replaces Israel.
Remember HE is a faithful husband and will fulfill the obligations of the "Exodus" Covenant in HIS time.

[34] And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
(Jeremiah 31:31-34 ESV)

The LORD [YHVH] is the ONE solely responsible for making this New Covenant a Reality.

Similarily JESUS is the ONE solely responsible for "building" HIS Church.

[18] And I tell you, you are Peter [4074/M], and on this [3778/F] rock [4073/F]
I WILL build MY church [1577/F], and the gates [4439] of hell [86] shall not prevail [2729] against it [846/F].

  • As a side note JESUS was not referring to Peter as the "rock", because it is in Feminine form and Peter is masculine.

SIN and INIQUITY

~ Concepts to meditate and consider ~

  • USING HIS WORD as the LENS through which we process the WORLD

  • Understanding the Hebraic Culture versus Pagan Culture [Greco-Roman]

  • Seeing Holiness as being SET APART

    • Why is this important to GRASP?

    • Set Apart from WHAT?

    • Is GOD trying to HELP Us or HURT Us?

Sin versus Iniquity

H2398            ha’ta               Sin
                                                “to miss the mark”

To go in the wrong direction – whether knowingly or unknowingly

G266              hamartia       to miss the mark
Or to be without a share in

H5771            `avon              guilt or punishment from doing that which is perverse or
                                                depraved.

The manifestation of “missing” the mark

H6588            pesha`            to transgress as in rebellion

G93                 adikia             unjust, one who practices injustice or unrighteousness

In essence, SIN is missing GOD's mark for us whereas as iniquity is the continual transgression of GOD's will.
  • Or SIN in continual motion

Remember  HIS TORAH is designed to help us HIT the MARK.
  • TORAH means instruction or teaching [Not what we commonly interpret as "Law"]

HOSEA 4:6

[6] My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge[1847], I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest [3547] to Me; seeing thou hast forgotten the TORAH [8451] of thy God, I also will forget thy children.”

What did JESUS say about the Hebrew Scriptures?

  1. He often quoted from the Hebrew Scriptures
  2. He commands us to observe the traditions in the Hebrew Scriptures

Matthew 5:17-20

[17 ] “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
[18 ] For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
[19 ] Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [20 ] For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 23:1-3

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,
[2] “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves on the chair of  Moses,
[3] so do and observe [5083] whatever they tell you—but not what they do. For they say, but they do not do.

#5083  tey’rey’o        to attend to carefully, to keep, to hold fast, observe

What is the Seat of Moses?

Recent Archaeological finds have discovered a literal chair in early synagogues.
It is believed that the Rabbis when teaching from the Torah sat in this chair, as a symbol of authority – AS MOSES.

Luke 24:44-45

[44] Now HE said to them, “These are MY words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about ME in the LAW OF MOSES and the PROPHETS and the PSALMS must be fulfilled.
[45] Then HE opened their minds to understand the Scriptures

Hebrew Scriptures are designed to form the FOUNDATION of our Knowledge.
